Flying Ipis is an all female punk band based in Manila. If you can understand Filipino, you’ll know that it means “flying cockroaches”. It’s definitely a name you will remember.
They’ve been around in the local music scene for quite some time now, but get this: they’ll be representing the Philippines at The South by Southwest 2016 (SXSW). SXSW is an annual music, film and technology conference held in Texas. Out of the thousands who applied, Flying Ipis made the cut. You guys, I love stories like these! Doesn’t it make you feel proud that Filipino musicians are spreading their talent across the globe?
Flying Ipis has been holding fundraising events to help bring ’em flying roaches to good ol Austin, Texas. You can back them here too! You can purchase stickers, t-shirts and tote bags. Every purchase helps them achieve their dream of going to SXSW.
Last February 24, they had a fundraising gig at B-side with a huge lineup of talented local acts: Farewell Fair Weather, Oh, Flamingo, Abra / Rjay Ty, Imago, We Are Imaginary, SQUID 9, Peryodiko, Assembly Generals, and Paranoid City!
If you want to catch Flying Ipis live, the have two upcoming gigs this week:
- March 3 at The Brewery
- March 4 at SaGuijo – The send-off gig before they fly to Austin
So won’t you be the fairy godmother and let the flying roaches have their cinderella moment?? 😉
